Akbayan Davao City protests DOH inaction on aerial spray ban

DAVAO CITY - Multisectoral groups belonging to Akbayan! party list staged a protest rally at the regional office of the Department of Health to urge Secretary Francisco Duque III to finally recommend to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to ban aerial spraying in plantations nationwide as it affects public health and the environment.  Some 100 protesters converged at the gates of the regional health office while DOH Assistant Secretary Paulyn Ubial met with representatives from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.  Japan is the number one buyer of Philippine bananas, a major user of aerial spraying.

Church seeks end to aerial pesticide spraying

The Catholic Church is seeking a dialogue with President Arroyo to appeal for the banning of aerial spraying of pesticide in banana plantations in Mindanao for the sake of the people there.

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said they intend to bring to the President’s attention how the people of Mindanao have suffered because of aerial spraying.

AN OFFICIAL is seeking an audience with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to discuss the banning of the use of aerial spraying in banana plantations in Mindanao.

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo of Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) National Secretariat for Social Action Justice and Peace, said they want the President to personally know the effects of aerial spraying to the people who are living near the agricultural estates.

"They beg for the safety of their lives, livelihood, and the future of their children," he said in their letter to President Arroyo dated October 20.

Pabillo met with some of Mamamayan Ayaw sa Aerial Spraying (Maas) members Friday afternoon at the Arzopispado de Manila in Intramuros.

Farmers Begin Stake Out Malacaņang for Ban on Aerial Spray

Farmers from Mindanao today started a stake out in Malacañang to press President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to uphold their basic human right to be protected against what has been called as the “poison rain.”

The 12 farmer members of the Mamamayan Ayaw sa Aerial Spraying (MAAS), all from Mindanao, started their Bantay Malacañang Laban sa Aerial Spraying, vowing not to stop until the President bans the said toxic agrcultural practice.

“We are doing this because we cannot bear the effects of aerial spraying anymore. The resolution is in the hands of the President. We appeal to her to meet with us and hear us and immediately stop the raining of poison on our lives and the lives of our children,” said Lizel Compas, a Mansaka farmer from Compostela Valley, in Filipino.
